Many contracting functions have different models for how contracts are managed and may face various resource constraints.  Alan Lewenstein and Maryellen Authier, members of W. L. Gore & Associates’ Medical Contracting Function, will describe how their team embarked on a year-long initiative to examine and improve how to best utilize Contract Manager resources to address staffing constraints as well as more effectively meet the needs of Gore’s Medical Products Division.

Our Experts: Alan Lewnstein and Maryellen Authier


Alan Lewenstein, J.D., is the Leader of the Global Contracts Function supporting the Medical Products Division within W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc.  He has over 8 years of experience in contract management.  He started at W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc. in January 2012, focused on the review, negotiation and execution of clinical study agreements.  Prior to coming to Gore, Alan worked as a Contracts Administrator with a medical device manufacturer and in Alumni Relations at his alma mater, California Western School of Law.  

Alan holds a Juris Doctor Degree from California Western School of Law, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Arizona and a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State University.

Alan resides in Phoenix, Arizona.



Maryellen Authier has over 15 years of experience in contract and commercial management. She is currently in a legal operations role at W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc. where she provides technology, data management and process support for the Legal Commercial group.  She spent 8 years working in Gore’s Medical Products division negotiating contracts and leading efforts to harmonize divisional contracting processes and tools.  Prior to joining Gore, Maryellen held various roles in contract and commercial management.

Maryellen has an M.A. in Information Science from the University of Arizona and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Maine. She has also completed training in Lean Six Sigma focused on continuous improvement in the delivery of business services. 

Maryellen lives in Phoenix, Arizona.
